Baseball Splits NJAC DH Against #22 Montclair

NEWARK, NJ | The Rutgers-Newark baseball team split its opening New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) doubleheader against #22 Montclair State University. Rutgers-Newark dropped the first game 13-4 before winning 9-7 in 10 innings in game two. The split moved the Scarlet Raiders to 16-5, 1-1 while Montclair moved to 13-3, 1-1.

Game 1: #22 Montclair 13, Rutgers-Newark 4

The Scarlet Raiders scattered four hits and scored four runs in their opening NJAC bout while Montclair used 19 hits to plate 13 runs. Gilroy Prial, Eric Recchia, Robert Gonzalez and Connor Baksh tallied the hits for Rutgers-Newark. Colin Thomson (2-2) threw six innings and allowed 13 hits and eight runs before leaving the bump.

Montclair was first on the scoreboard, plating a pair of runs in the bottom of the 3rd inning. Paul Recchia grounded out to the shortstop in the top of the 4th to bring home Michael Weinbel to cut their deficit in half. The Red Hawks responded with four runs in the bottom of the frame to extend their lead to five over the Scarlet Raiders. 

Rutgers-Newark found their bats in the top of the 6th as Recchia brought in a run to start the streak. Errors were a problem for the Red Hawks in the 6th, as the Scarlet Raiders used the three to score three runs. Montclair answered with seven runs spread across the final three innings to close out the opening NJAC contest. 

Game 2: Rutgers-Newark 9, #22 Montclair 7 (10 inn.)

The Scarlet Raiders used eight hits to score 9 runs in the second game as they took down #22 in extra innings. Eric Recchia led the team going 3-for-4 with 2 RBIs while Matthew Rypkema went 2-for-6 with 2 RBIs. Vince Taylor (4-1) came in at the end of the game and helped the Scarlet Raiders hold off the Red Hawks.

Rutgers-Newark opened the scoring in the first inning when Rypkema hit a 2 RBI single up the middle. Montclair responded with a run in the bottom of the frame to cut the Scarlet Raiders' lead in half. The Scarlet Raiders, behind two RBIs by Recchia, went on to score four more runs in the 4th before plating one in the 8th which sent the game into extra innings. 

In the top of the 10th, an error allowed the Scarlet Raiders to cross two runs before Taylor shut down Montclair to win their first NJAC game of the season.

The Scarlet Raiders return to action on Tuesday, April 4 at 3:00 pm when they travel to Jersey City, NJ to take on New Jersey City University.
