#8 Southern Virginia Too Much For #14 Men's Volleyball

BUENA VISTA, VA | The #14 ranked Rutgers-Newark men's volleyball squad squared off against #8 Southern Virginia this evening and fell in straight sets, 3-0 (25-14, 25-15, 25-15). The loss drops the Scarlet Raiders 12-7, 4-3 while Southern Virginia improved to 17-2, 7-1. 

Andrew Zaleck was held to a season-low six kills in the 3-0 loss to the Knights. Derek Au added 9 assists while Justin Tuohy and Matt Nikishin picked up five digs. 

In the opening set, the Scarlet Raiders fell behind 12-5 and were unable to make up that difference. Zaleck looked to try and give the Scarlet Raiders a boost with a kill but Southern Virginia used a 5-1 to put the set out of reach. The second set, Rutgers-Newark was unable to keep up with Southern Virginia as the Knights leapt out to an 11-2 lead. Once again, Rutgers-Newark began to gain steam and Southern Virginia closed the door with a 5-1 run.

The 3rd set saw the Scarlet Raiders and Knights battle it out until the Knights used a 10-2 run to jump out to the lead and carry it to the end. 

Up Next:
The Scarlet Raiders return to action on Saturday, April 8 when they close out the regular season against Roanoke at 3:00 pm.
