Rutgers-Newark Drops NJAC Game Against Rutgers-Camden

CAMDEN, NJ | The Rutgers-Newark baseball team had their win streak ended this evening, 4-3, against their counterparts from the south, Rutgers-Camden. The Scarlet Raptors split the series after falling 8-1 yesterday to improve to 15-8, 2-2 while the Scarlet Raiders fell to 18-6, 2-2. 

Marcus James pitched eight innings for the Scarlet Raiders and tallied two strikeouts, however, it was Denny Furcal (0-1) who earned the decision in 1.1 innings of action. Rutgers-Newark scattered 11 hits and played clean baseball in the field as Rutgers-Camden was charged with three errors. Eric Recchia continues to abuse opposing pitchers and finished 2-for-5 while Michael Weinbel and Armanda Alvarez added two hits each. 

It was the home team who got on the scoreboard first. Rutgers-Camden tallied two runs in the bottom of the 3rd before the Scarlet Raiders responded with a pair in the top of the 4th. Matthew Rypkema used a sacrifice fly to score Weinbel who reached on a walk earlier in the inning. Robert Gonzalez then found the plate via a fielding error to knot the game up at two. 

In the top of the 7th, the Scarlet Raiders briefly took the lead behind a sacrifice fly from Gilroy Prial. The Scarlet Raptors quickly responded with a run in the 8th which forced the game into extra innings. There, the Scarlet Raptors prevented the Scarlet Raiders from scoring and plated a run of their own in the bottom of the frame to split the season series.

The Scarlet Raiders return to action on Saturday, April 8 when they host The College of New Jersey at 11:30 am.
