Career-High by Chromulak Surges Scarlet Raiders to Tri-Match Sweep

UTICA, NY | The Rutgers-Newark men's volleyball squad picked up two wins on Saturday afternoon against Hilbert 3-0 and SUNY Poly (3-1) to find their way back into the win column.

Match 1: Rutgers-Newark 3, Hilbert 0 (26-24, 25-17, 25-21)

Rutgers-Newark (2-1) was led by Lucas Blanco's seven kills and Derek Au's 27 assists. The Scarlet Raiders, as a team, hit .321 and held Hilbert to .149. Hilbert (2-2) picked up seven kills from Alex Overhoff.

Hilbert controlled the pace of play for the majority of the opening set, holding an 18-14 lead late. Down by a pair, Rutgers-Newark tallied five straight points, with two kills by Blanco, to take the lead, 23-21. Hilbert wouldn't go quietly and fought their way back into the lead 24-23. Rutgers-Newark benefited from three errors by Hilbert to take the 1-0 lead in the match.

In the second set, the Scarlet Raiders used a strong opening to the set which put them up 10-4. A pair of kills by Au later in the set further extended their lead before closing out the set with a pair of service aces to go up 2-0.

In the final set, both teams went back and forth in the beginning with neither team able to gain a foothold. Up by two, 20-18, Amir Johnson and Aidan Apito secured two kills which set up the Scarlet Raiders for the sweep.

Match 2: Rutgers-Newark 3, SUNY Poly 1 (25-16, 25-18, 25-19, 25-20)

Rutgers-Newark (3-1) had a monstrous showing in the second match of the day and tallied 57 kills as a team. Martin Chromulak tallied a career-high 23 kills in the win with Lucas Blanco adding 18. Au passed his way to 45 assists while Fernando Paredes picked up eight digs. SUNY Poly (2-5) was led by Jason Aubrey and Peter Gottler's seven kills.

The Scarlet Raiders used a 6-1 run to break free of the back and forth against SUNY Poly. Needing three points to secure the opening set win, Chromulak pounded down two kills to put the Scarlet Raiders up 1-0.

SUNY Poly evened the match in the second after a strong start which put them in the lead 6-1 early on. Chromulak brought Rutgers-Newark within four with a kill late, however, SUNY Poly shut the door on any comeback attempt to even the match at 1.

With the third set close with the teams separated by just one point, Rutgers-Newark jumped further ahead with a 6-0 run capped by a Johnson kill. In the final set, the Scarlet Raiders pulled away late to pick up their third win of the season.

Rutgers-Newark returns to action on Friday, February 2 when they head to Dallas, PA for a non-conference tri-match for the Misericordia Tournament.
