Men's Volleyball Drops Opening CVC Match to Randolph-Macon, 3-1

ASHLAND, VA | The Scarlet Raiders men's volleyball team dropped a Continental Volleyball Conference (CVC) match to Randolph-Macon College on Friday evening, 3-1 (25-18, 28-26, 32-30, 25-21)

Rutgers-Newark (5-4, 0-1) was led by Lucas Blanco's career-high 24 kills. He did so while also hitting .348. Derek Au tallied an efficient 46 assists while Vincent Lopez added 9 kills. Defensively, Amir Johnson tallied a match-high seven blocks. Randolph-Macon (5-5, 1-0) had four members of the squad in double digits in the kill category with Kody Rogan leading the way with 16.

The Yellowjackets got off to a quick start, 7-1, however, halfway through the set the Scarlet Raiders came within three, 15-12. Rutgers-Newark wasn't able to build off of that run as Randolph-Macon extended its lead again with a 4-1 run. A pair of kills by Blanco tried to spark the offense but Randolph-Macon was able to fend off the Scarlet Raiders' comeback attempt and go up 1-0 in the match.

In the second set, the Scarlet Raiders once again found themselves in a hole but this time were able to climb out of it via a kill by Johnson and attacking errors by the Yellowjackets. Rutgers-Newark pushed its lead out to five, 18-13, thanks to a 5-1 run capped by a service ace by Josh Ledesma. The Yellowjackets made a late push and cut the lead down to one, 21-20, but were successfully held off down the stretch by the Scarlet Raiders to even the match at one.

The third set saw an even set until Randolph-Macon outscored Rutgers-Newark 5-1 to put them in the lead 21-17. The Scarlet Raiders would respond with a run of their own highlighted by two kills from Aleks Kolodziej to go up 23-22. The set would pass the 25-point marker as the earlier back-and-forth affair returned, however, Randolph-Macon was able to catapult themselves into the lead and close out the set.

In the fourth set, Rutgers-Newark held a 14-9 lead before Randolph-Macon returned to form and used a 6-1 run to close out the match.
