Led by Blanco, Men's Volleyball Returns to Win Column With 3-0 Sweep of Ramapo

MAHWAH, NJ | The Rutgers-Newark men's volleyball squad returned to the win column Wednesday evening with a 3-0 (25-8, 25-15, 25-10) over Ramapo College.

Rutgers-Newark (6-4) was led by Lucas Blanco's seven kills and his .667 hit percentage. Blanco also led the team with a career-high seven service aces while Aleks Kolodziej added six kills. Derek Au collected 16 assists with Evan Jazmin pacing the way with seven digs. Ramapo (3-2) picked up five kills from Reece Kirchofer while the team hit -.159 for the match. 

In the opening set, the Scarlet Raiders hit .444 as a team with 10 kills and six service aces. Halfway through the set, the Scarlet Raiders extended its lead over the Roadrunners via a service ace by Vincent Lopez. Ramapo's offense stumbled following the ace and suffered four attacking errors which allowed the Scarlet Raiders to close out the opening set to take a 1-0 lead in the match.

Rutgers-Newark continued to build off of that success with another solid set against Ramapo. A Kill by Blanco put the Scarlet Raiders ahead 15-10 which ignited a 6-0 run that included two service aces by Blanco. After Ramapo went on a 3-1 run, the Scarlet Raiders quickly closed out the set to take a 2-0 lead.

The Scarlet Raiders kept Ramapo on their heels in the third set by hitting .217 with 9 kills. Rutgers-Newark jumped out to a 9-1 lead early to prevent Ramapo from gaining any momentum early in the set. Up by four, the Scarlet Raiders' offense went on a 10-4 run to separate themselves from the Roadrunners to complete the sweep and return to the win column. 

Rutgers-Newark returns to action on Saturday, February 17 when they host Juniata in their home opener at 1:00 p.m.
