#11 Juniata Takes Down Men's Volleyball in Straight Sets

NEWARK, NJ | The Rutgers-Newark men's volleyball team suffered its second Continental Volleyball Conference (CVC) loss of the season, 3-0 (25-17, 25-18, 25-18), to #11 Juniata College.

Rutgers-Newark (6-5, 0-2) hit .088 as a team with 24 kills. Martin Chromulak and Amir Johnson paced the team with six kills each with Johnson leading the way with a .357 hit percentage. Derek Au once again led the team with 20 assists while Johnson tallied three blocks. Juniata (8-4, 2-0) hit .368 against the Scarlet Raiders and was led by Juan Armando and Tyler Goldsborough's 12 and 11 kills, respectively.

The Scarlet Raiders got off to a slow start against the Eagles, falling behind 12-5. Rutgers-Newark sparked its offense late in the set, using a 4-2 run, lead by Johnson and Vincent Lopez to do so. Rutgers-Newark cut the lead down to six but an untimely service error would end the rally as Juniata would go up 1-0 in the match.

In the second set, the Scarlet Raiders came out strong and took a 10-7 lead over the Eagles. Chromulak and Aleks Kolodziej kept Rutgers-Newark ahead with a kill each, however, Juniata would go on to knot the set up at 17. From there, Juniata went on an 8-1 run to close out the set and take a 2-0 lead over the Scarlet Raiders.

Once again, Rutgers-Newark took an early lead before a run by Juniata put them back in the lead 12-8. Derek Au tattooed one off fo the floor to bring the Scarlet Raiders within three, however, Juniata responded with a 4-0 run to put them in the driver's seat to close out the match in their favor.

Rutgers-Newark returns to action on Wednesday, February 21 at 7pm when they host New Jersey City University.
