Men's Volleyball Stumbles Against NJCU, 3-1

NEWARK, NJ | The Rutgers-Newark men's volleyball squad suffered its first loss to New Jersey City University in program history on Wednesday evening, 3-1 (25-18, 25-23, 28-26, 25-19).

Rutgers-Newark (6-6) was held to .087 hitting as a team, with 55 kills. Martin Chromulak paced the team with 16 kills on .045 hitting while Lucas Blanco finished with 13 kills. Derek Au controlled the court with a team-high 45 assists while adding six kills. Defensively, Fernando Paredes tallied 16 digs with Vincent Lopez leading the way with three blocks. NJCU (3-7) tallied 27 block assists and five solo blocks led by Brandon DaSilva's 11 (three solo). Offensively, DaSilva and Pardasie paced the team with 11 kills each.

The Gothic Knights jumped out to a 5-1 lead in the first set which shrunk to a 9-6 lead after a kill by Blanco. NJCU would respond with an 8-1 run, thrusting its lead out to 17-7. The Scarlet Raiders weren't so quick to wave the white flag as a 5-1 run led by Chromulak brought them back within five. Lopez would later cap a 3-0 run by the Scarlet Raiders to cut the lead down to four, only to have NJCU close out the set with a 3-0 run.

Rutgers-Newark responded in the second set to level the match at one. The Scarlet Raiders overcame an early deficit to knot the set at 13 thanks to an NJCU attacking error. Chromulak finally pushed the Scarlet Raiders past the Gothic Knights with back-to-back kills, however, NJCU would tie it up again at 19. Blanco added two markers to the scoreboard for Rutgers-Newark, putting them ahead 23-21 before Chromulak closed out the set with a kill.

NJCU once again used a quick start to set the Scarlet Raiders back from the first serve. Kills by Au and Chromulak leveled the set at 16 after the Scarlet Raiders dug their way out of the deficit. The Gothic Knights regained their earlier form and outscored the Scarlet Raiders 4-1 over the next five points. Rutgers-Newark would once again battle back and give themselves set point, however, much like the first set, NJCU would prevent the Scarlet Raiders from securing the win with three unanswered points to take a 2-1 lead in the match.

In the final set, Rutgers-Newark held a 13-11 lead before NJCU exploded on an 8-1 putting them in the lead, 18-13. The Gothic Knight would hold onto that lead and secure the win to close out the match.
