Men's Volleyball Returns to Form With 3-0 Sweep of Drew

NEWARK, NJ | The Rutgers-Newark men's volleyball squad returned to form on Friday evening with a 3-0 (25-16, 25-18, 25-15) sweep of Drew University.

Rutgers-Newark (7-6) hit .351 as a team led by Lucas Blanco's 13 kills on .524 hitting. Derek Au collected 35 assists while Martin Chromulak led paced the team with five block assists. Drew (6-10) was held to -.045 hitting as a team and picked up a team-high three kills by Jacob Sledz and Destan Llolla. 

After opening the set with a back-and-forth affair, Rutgers-Newark grabbed hold of the lead behind a pair of kills by Aleks Kolodziej. Chromulak then sparked a 7-2 run, putting the Scarlet Raiders ahead, 14-6. The Rangers would remain close and cut the lead down to four before Rutgers-Newark stretched the lead back to seven highlighted by a kill from Au. Vincent Lopez made an impact late in the game with a violent kill which would ignite the Scarlet Raiders to a 4-1 run to take a 1-0 lead in the match. 

Once again the set opened with both teams trading points before the Scarlet Raiders took charge. Au tallied another kill before adding a service ace to his ledger to push the Scarlet Raiders' lead out to 13-8. The Rangers refused to go away and brought themselves within two before another run by the Scarlet Raiders put them comfortably in the driver's seat. Rutgers-Newark closed out the set with kills by Lopez, Kolodziej, and Blanco to go up 2-0 in the match. 

Rutgers-Newark closed out the match with a dominant performance in the third and final set. Pavlo Chernyshov put Rutgers-Newark up 12-7 after he capped a 3-0 run. Late in the set, Juan Silva secured a service ace to put Rutgers-Newark just two points away from victory which would come three rallies later when Blanco slammed one home.

The Scarlet Raiders return to action on Saturday, February 24 when they host Baruch College at 1:00 pm.
