Men's Volleyball Stunned by Baruch, 3-2

NEWARK, NJ | The Rutgers-Newark men's volleyball was upset at home against Baruch College, 3-2 (25-17, 25-19, 30-28, 25-20, 15-13) at The Golden Dome on Saturday. The win for Baruch marks its first win over the Scarlet Raiders in program history.

Rutgers-Newark (7-7) hit .258 as a squad with 59 kills led by Lucas Blanco's 14. Aleks Kolodziej tallied a career-high 12 kills in the loss while Derek Au collected 46 assists while also leading the team with eight digs. Baruch (4-6) came back from two sets down to steal a win from the Scarlet Raiders and were led by Peter Gavroff who secured 13 kills.

To open the match, the Scarlet Raiders and Bearcats went toe-to-toe early on before Amir Johnson sparked an 8-2 run for the Scarlet Raiders to put them ahead 15-8. The Bearcats tried to cut the lead down via a 4-1 run, however, errors mixed in with a kill from Kolodziej sealed the opening set for the Scarlet Raiders.

Rutgers-Newark recorded its highest hitting percentage of the match (.360) in the second set. Baruch jumped out ahead early, taking a 10-7 lead before the Scarlet Raiders responded with a 4-1 run to knot the set at 11. Once tied, Rutgers-Newark dug their feet in and used a 9-3 run to take a 2-0 lead in the match.

The third set is where the momentum of the match swung in favor of Baruch. Rutgers-Newark held an 18-14 lead late in the set, but Barch would storm back and give themselves set point, 24-23. After some trading of points, Baruch closed out the set on a 3-0 run to bring the match to 2-1.

Baruch built off of their success from the previous set and jumped out to an 11-6 lead. With that lead, the Bearcats kept the Scarlet Raiders at arm's length as they would go on to even the match at two before taking the final set to claim the non-conference win.

Rutgers-Newark returns to action on Friday, March 1 at 7:00 pm when they host Lancaster Bible College.
