Baseball Blanked on the Road by Stevens

HOBOKEN, NJ | The Rutgers-Newark baseball squad fell short against Stevens Institute of Technology on Friday afternoon, 15-0, in non-conference play. 

Rutgers-Newark (2-2) committed two errors and tallied two hits in the loss to the Ducks. Robert Gonzalez and Devin Rojas each finished with one hit. On the hill, Vince Taylor (0-2) tossed four innings and allowed 11 hits and seven earned runs while striking out three batters. Stevens (5-0) remained undefeated and used three home runs to do so. As a team, the Ducks scattered 18 hits while leaving seven runners on the pillows. Eli Somers led all batters, going 4-for-5 with 3 RBIs and two runs. 

Stevens wasted no time putting a run on the scoreboard, finding their first run in the bottom of the first via a solo home run to right field by Somers. The Ducks followed that inning up with a trio of runs backed by a 2 RBI double to right center. 

After two innings of silence, the Ducks exploded for seven runs to extend their lead to 11-0 over the Scarlet Raiders in the bottom of the 5th. Stevens added four more runs the following inning before the Scarlet Raiders were able to shut down the Ducks in the remaining innings. 

Rutgers-Newark returns to action on Saturday, March 2 when they host MIT at 8:00 p.m. at Weequahic Park.
