Baseball's Comeback Comes Up Short Against MIT, 2-1

NEWARK, NJ | The Scarlet Raiders baseball team fell to MIT in non-conference action on Saturday night, 2-1, at Weequahic Park.

Rutgers-Newark (2-3) scattered six hits and left eight runners on the pillows. Connor Baksh paced the Scarlet Raiders with two hits while Matthew Storch led the way with the lone RBI. On the hill, Robert Gonzalez (0-1) threw six innings with seven strikeouts. MIT (1-0) tallied eight hits and played clean baseball in the field in the win. Zev Moore finished 2-for-3 at the dish while Tyler Godrey went 1-for-3 with 2 RBIs. Karl Meyer (1-0) pitched five innings with seven strikeouts while allowing four hits.

After two scoreless innings, the Engineers opened its scoring ledger with an RBI double to left field by Godfrey.  In the next inning, Rutgers-Newark put three runners on the bases but left them stranded when the inning came to a close via a strikeout. 

The pitching duel would continue as neither team could find any runs. MIT would however double its tally in the top of the 7th via a sacrifice fly. Rutgers-Newark would tally its first run of the game in the bottom of the 8th after Eric Recchia hit a lead-off single to get on base. Recchia wouldn't have to wait long as Storch doubled to left center to bring Recchia home to cut the lead in half. In the bottom of the 9th, the Scarlet Raiders would go down in order as MIT would hold onto the win.

The Scarlet Raiders return to action on Tuesday, March 5 when they host FDU-Florham at 3:30 pm.
