Baseball Completes Comeback Against FDU-Florham With Walk Off by Bernardo

NEWARK, NJ | Joseph Bernardo hit a walk-off single to complete the incredible comeback over FDU-Florham, 8-7, on Tuesday night at Weequahic Park.

Rutgers-Newark (3-3) scattered 10 hits and tallied eight runs in the thrilling come-from-behind win. Robert Gonzalez paced the Scarlet Raiders, going 3-for-5 with an RBI while Eric Recchia finished 1-for-3 with 3 RBIs and a home run. Connor Baksh and Bernardo each tallied two hits with Baksh adding 2 RBIs. FDU-Florham (3-4) used six hits to score seven runs and tallied one error in the game. Jake Hendershot was the lone Devil to finish with a multi-hit game, finishing 2-for-3 with an RBI.

The Devils were first on the scoreboard, plating a run via a wild pitch. Rutgers-Newark would respond in the bottom of the frame with a run of their own when Gonzalez hit an RBI single to right field to score Paul Recchia. FDU-Florham would add another tally in the next frame to take a 2-1 lead over the Scarlet Raiders. That lead wouldn't last long as Baksh hit a 2 RBI single up the middle to propel the Scarlet Raiders into the lead.

Disaster would strike for the Scarlet Raiders in the 6th as FDU would plate five runs, all on walks. Rutgers-Newark, however, had other plans as they would hold the Devils scoreless for the remainder of the game, setting themselves up for glory in the bottom of the 9th.

Daniel Fedorco set the tone in the bottom of the 9th with a lead-off triple to right center. Paul Recchia fought his way to a walk before his brother, Eric Recchia, annihilated a ball over the left-center field wall for a three-run homer to bring the Scarlet Raiders within one. Matthew Storch kept the rally going with a double to right field before getting pinch-ran for by Ricky Gonzalez. The lone error of the game couldn't have come at a better time for the Scarlet Raiders as Michael Weinbel reached via a throwing error, setting himself up for the game-winning run. Baksh was intentionally walked, which brought Bernardo to the plate. Bernardo battled to a full count before hitting a line drive through the right side which sent Weinbel home where he was able to slide under the tag for the game-winning run.

Rutgers-Newark will head to Florida for the Russ Matt Invitational on Saturday.
