Rutgers-Newark Baseball Explodes for 23 Runs Against Curry, 23-9

DAVENPORT, FL | The Scarlet Raiders tallied its highest tally since 2018, plating 23 runs against Curry College as part of The Russ Matt Central Florida Invitational on Sunday afternoon. 

Rutgers-Newark (5-3) scattered 18 hits and plated 23 runs in the 23-9 win over Curry College. Michael Weinbel and Paul Recchia finished with three hits and 4 RBIs each. Joseph Bernardo joined Recchia and Weinbel by collecting 4 RBIs on on two hits. On the mound, Robert Gonzalez (2-1) threw three innings and allowed five runs on eight hits with one strikeout. Curry College (3-1) scored 9 runs on 14 hits and tallied three errors. Marshall led Curry at the dish, going 3-for-4 with an RBI. 

Curry College got ahead early, scoring three runs in the top of the frame. Rutgers-Newark responded with four runs in the bottom of the 1st to take the lead. Matthew Storch got the scoring started with an RBI single before Weinbel quickly brought in another run. Bernardo closed out the inning with a 2 RBI double to put Rutgers-Newark in the lead. 

Curry added another run in the top of the second before the Scarlet Raiders exploded for seven runs in the bottom of the 2nd. Paul Recchia began the inning with a lead-off double and was promptly brought home by a sacrifice fly. The Scarlet Raiders continued to scatter the diamond with hits as they took advantage of two errors to take a large lead. 

The scoring continued into the 3rd inning when they added a pair of runs.  In the 6th, Curry got back on the board, plating a pair of runs, however, Rutgers-Newark responded with 10 runs to end the game in seven innings.

Rutgers-Newark returns to action on Monday, March 11 where they will face off against Penn State Abington.
