Homers by Recchia and Evensen Power Rutgers-Newark Baseball Past Penn State Abington, 11-4

DAVENPORT, FL | The Scarlet Raiders kept the win streak alive Monday morning with an 11-4 win over Penn State Abington. 

Rutgers-Newark (6-3) scattered 14 hits and tallied 11 runs led by Connor Baksh's three hits. Baksh finished the day 3-for-4 with 3 RBIs and two runs. Eric Recchia, Matthew Storch, Jesse Evensen, and Jon Rosado all added two hits each. On the hill, Chase Ostrowski (1-0) dealt 7 innings with five strikeouts and three earned runs. Penn State Abington (2-9) scored four runs on 9 hits. Sean Doherty led the way for the Nittany Lions, going 3-for-4 with an RBI.

Penn State Abington broke the deadlock in the 3rd inning, using a ground-rule double to plate the first run of the game. Rutgers-Newark responded with three runs in the bottom of the frame to take a 3-1 lead. Storch brought in the first pair of runs in the inning before Joseph Bernardo boosted the tally to three with an RBI single to right field. 

The Nittany Lions tied the game in the top of the 4th with a pair of runs before the Scarlet Raiders tallied another three runs in the bottom of the inning. Baksh used a 2 RBI double to move the needle back in favor of the Scarlet Raiders and Daniel Fedorco tallied an RBI ground-rule double to push them ahead by three. Over the next three innings, the Scarlet Raiders added five more runs powered by homers from Eric Recchia and Jesse Evensen.

Penn State managed to add another marker in the top of the 9th but their comeback attempt would fall short there as the Scarlet Raiders would secure another win.

Rutgers-Newark returns to action on Tuesday, March 12 against University of Pittsburgh at Greensburg.
