Men's Volleyball Surges to Tri-Match Win in Elizabethtown, Pa

ELIZABETHTOWN, PA | The Rutgers-Newark men's volleyball squad swept the tri-match this afternoon against Elizabethtown and Penn St. Schuylkill. 

Match 1: Rutgers-Newark 3, Elizabethtown 1 (25-19, 25-16, 25-19, 25-20) 

Rutgers-Newark (11-8, 1-2) was led by Martin Chromulak's 16 kills with Aleks Kolodziej adding 11 kills. Derek Au led the team with 40 assists while Juan Silva tied the team lead for blocks with Chromulak with six. Elizabethtown (11-8, 1-2) picked up 9 kills Nick Chapman and seven digs. Nate Seeger paced the team with 28 assists. 

The Scarlet Raiders fell behind 11-6 early on before they rallied late to take a 19-18 lead highlighted by a Chromulak and Amir Johnson kill. Elizabethtown responded with a 7-0 run to close out the set and take a 1-0 lead in the match. 

In the second set, the Scarlet Raiders opened with a strong 6-1 run behind a pair of kills by Chromulak. Elizabethtown tried to cut into the lead and got as close as 16-11 before the Scarlet Raiders used a 6-3 run to take a 22-14 lead. Fernando Paredes closed out the set with a kill to even the match at one. 

Lucas Blanco pushed the Scarlet Raiders ahead by two, 14-12, halfway through the set with a kill off of a pass from Au. Elizabethtown would tie it up at 14 but Rutgers-Newark would quickly jump back in front by three. With just one point separating the teams, Rutgers-Newark proceeded to go on a 5-0 run to increase the gap between the teams. Behind the big surge, the Scarlet Raiders closed out the set with a kill by Kolodziej to go up 2-1 in the match. 

Rutgers-Newark secured the Continental Volleyball Conference (CVC) win in the fourth set by using a 9-2 run midway through to create a gap that they rode to the end of the match.

Match 2: Rutgers-Newark 3, Penn St. Schuylkill 0 (25-8, 25-9, 25-15) 

Rutgers-Newark (12-8) hit .162 as a squad and tallied 19 kills while holding the Nittany Lions to just two. Pavlo Chernyshov paced the Scarlet Raiders with seven kills while Silva and Vincent Lopez added five and four, respectively. Kaden Komine led the offense with 16 assists while Yann Gomes and Evan Jazmin tallied four digs each. PSUS (0-5) picked up two kills and hit -.348 as a team. 

The Scarlet Raiders quickly jumped out to an 11-4 lead over the Nittany Lions behind four straight service aces by Lucas Blanco. Komine then followed up Blanco with four service aces of his own during a 9-0 run that pushed the Scarlet Raiders ahead 22-7. Chernyshov closed out the set with a kill to put the Scarlet Raiders ahead 1-0 in the match. 

Rutgers-Newark carried that momentum into the second set where they exploded on a 12-2 run once again headlined by Komine service aces. Komine finished the match with a career-high 9 service aces in the win. After Gomes secured a pair of service aces, Silva closed out the set with a kill.

The Scarlet Raiders continued to pick apart PSUS in the final set as they would cruise to the match sweep to go a perfect 2-0 on the day. 

Rutgers-Newark returns to action on Friday, March 22 when they head to Virginia for a CVC bout against Marymount.
