NEWARK, NJ | The Rutgers-Newark men's volleyball team dropped a thrilling five-set match against #14 New York University at The Golden Dome on Saturday afternoon, 3-2 (29-27, 25-23, 25-21, 25-21, 15-11).

Rutgers-Newark (8-8) hit .122 as a team with 56 kills. Aleks Kolodziej had a career day, tallying a team-high 16 kills while hitting .290. Lucas Blanco and Martin Chromulak added 15 and 14 kills, respectively. Derek Au collected 45 assists and Fernando Paredes tallied a career-high 17 digs. At the net, Vincent Lopez paced the team with seven blocks (two solos). NYU (7-5) was led by Ry Kagan's 16 kills and Devyn Nguyen's 39 assists.

The Scarlet Raiders climbed out of a hole to start the game as they trailed  5-2 early on. Later in the set, NYU had set point, however, a kill by Amir Johnson knotted the set up at 25. Chromulak and Blanco would secure kills paired with errors by the Violets to go up 1-0 in the match.

NYU would break even after holding off the Scarlet Raiders in the second set. Once again Rutgers-Newark had to battle back and would go on to tie it up at 20 behind a sneaky kill by Au. Rutgers-Newark would get their total as high as 23 as NYU closed out the narrow set.

In the third set, Rutgers-Newark flipped the script and took advantage early, jumping out to an 11-7 lead. NYU, however, would respond with an 8-0 run before Blanco picked up a kill to stop the bleeding. The Violets took a 21-20 lead late and the Scarlet Raiders would respond with a 5-0 run to close out the set.

The Violets send the match to a fifth set with a 6-1 run in the middle of the fourth, giving them the cushion needed to win the set.

In the 5th, NYU jumped out to a 6-0 lead before the Scarlet Raiders regained form and behind a kill from Kolodziej, brought the set within striking distance. NYU would slam the door closed on the comeback attempt and pick up the final two points to win the match.
