Houseknecht Tallies Five Hits in Doubleheader Against Brooklyn

BROOKLYN, NY | The Scarlet Raiders softball squad picked up its first two wins of the season on Friday night against Brooklyn College. 

Game 1: Rutgers-Newark 7, Brooklyn 2

Rutgers-Newark (1-10) used 10 hits to score seven runs behind two hits from Marissa Houseknecht, Keelin O'Brien, and Alexis Claiborne. Madison Umlauf tallied six strikeouts in a complete game win. Brooklyn (3-4) tallied eight hits and two errors. 

Jessica Boyce opened the Scarlet Raiders' scoring ledger in game one with an RBI single. Rutgers-Newark doubled its lead in the 3rd behind an error before Brooklyn etched their first run of the game into the scoreboard in the bottom of the frame. The Scarlet Raiders did most of its damage in the top of the 7th where they plated four runs to push their total to seven in the game, a total that would prove to be too much for the Bulldogs. 

Game 2: Rutgers-Newark 12, Brooklyn 2

Rutgers-Newark (2-10) tallied 15 hits and scored 12 runs behind a trio of his from Mariah Rimas-McManus (3-for-3, 2 RBIs) and Houseknecht (3-for-3, 4 RBIs). In the circle, Kayla Cardozo picked up her first win of the season with three strikeouts. Brooklyn (3-5) was held to three hits and two runs in the second game. 

The Scarlet Raiders wasted no time scoring runs in game two, tallying three behind an RBI double from Houseknecht. Kalyna Figol brought home the following runs with a single to put three runs on the board in the first inning. Brooklyn cut into the lead in the bottom of the frame with a run, however, Rutgers-Newark would close out the game by scoring 9 runs over the final three innings to secure its second win of the season.

Rutgers-Newark returns to action on Sunday, March 24 when they host St. Joseph's University-Long Island.
