Chromulak & Blanco Lead Men's Volleyball Past Kean, 3-1

NEWARK, NJ | The Rutgers-Newark men's volleyball team took down Kean University, 3-1 (25-20, 25-18, 25-22, 25-15), in Continental Volleyball Conference (CVC) play at The Golden Dome on Wednesday night.

Rutgers-Newark (13-10, 2-3) hit .271 as a team and tallied 60 kills. Martin Chromulak and Lucas Blanco paced the team with 17 kills each while Aleks Kolodziej added 13. Derek Au dished out 48 assists while Amir Johnson secured six blocks, three solo. Kean University (12-13, 0-5) hit .136 as a team and secured 39 kills.

After balanced play to open the match, Rutgers-Newark began to pull away behind a 7-2 run sparked by a pair of Chromulak kills. The Cougars made a late push, cutting the lead down to four, but the tandem of Kolodziej and Johnson slammed the door closed to take a 1-0 lead in the match.

Set two played out similarly to set one as the early stages saw play swing back and forth until Kolodziej ignited a run by the Scarlet Raiders. On the other side of the run, the Scarlet Raiders gained a four-point advantage, 18-14, to jump into the driver's seat. From there they wouldn't relinquish the lead as Blanco picked up the final tally of the set.

Kean bounced back in the third stanza, after taking the lead via a 7-1 run.

With the match headed to a fourth set, the Scarlet Raiders locked in and quickly jumped out to a large lead, a lead they would carry to the end of the match.

Rutgers-Newark returns to action on Friday, March 29 when they host Roanoke on senior night.
