Men's Volleyball Downs Roanoke on Senior Night, 3-1

NEWARK, NJ | The Rutgers-Newark men's volleyball team punched its ticket to the Continental Volleyball Conference (CVC) Tournament this evening with a 3-1 (25-19, 25-21, 25-17, 25-21) victory over Roanoke College. Martin Chromulak and Lucas Blanco were each honored before the match with honorary action photos.

Rutgers-Newark (14-10, 3-4) hit .184 as a team and tallied 49 kills while holding Roanoke (14-13, 1-6) to .089 hitting and 38 kills. Chromulak paced the team with 16 kills while Blanco and Kolodziej tallied 11 each. Derek Au continues to stand out and picked up 40 assists and five digs.

The Maroons and Scarlet Raiders bounced back and forth in the early part of the opening set until the teams knotted it up at 11. Martin Chromulak sparked a run by the Scarlet Raiders with a service ace that pushed their lead out to 17-13, forcing Roanoke to take a timeout. A kill by Rutkowski brought Roanoke within two points out of the break. Roanoke, however, stalled at the 16-point mark while Rutgers-Newark charged forward until they hit set point. The Maroons put together a rally at the end of the set but that run came to an end when Chromulak secured the final kill.

The second set played out similar to the first except it was Roanoke who led up to the midway point, 14-10. Kills by Aleks Kolodziej and Chromulak flipped the script and put Rutgers-Newark in the lead, 19-17. Lucas Blanco then stretched the lead out to five behind back-to-back kills. The Maroons quickly cut the lead down to three but Kolodziej stepped up in a big way to slam the door closed to give Rutgers-Newark a 2-0 lead in the match.

Roanoke took a set from the Scarlet Raiders in the third via a 25-17 scoreline. The Maroons jumped out to a 16-11 lead and held the Scarlet Raiders at bay despite a late push that brought them within four.

Rutgers-Newark jumped out to a 5-1 lead to start the fourth set and would go on to carry that to the end of the match to secure the CVC win.

The Scarlet Raiders return to action on Saturday, March 29 when they host No. 2 Southern Virginia University to end the regular season.
