Men's Volleyball Goes Toe-To-Toe With No. 2 Southern Virginia But Falls in Five Sets

NEWARK, NJ | The Rutgers-Newark men's volleyball team went toe-to-toe this afternoon with No. 2 Southern Virginia University and fell in five sets, 3-2 (25-17, 25-20, 25-22, 25-19, 15-11) as part of Continental Volleyball Conference (CVC) play.

Rutgers-Newark (14-11. 3-5) handed SVU their most amount of losses in a match this season. Before today's match, SVU had swept every opponent except a 3-1 win over Juniata. The Scarlet Raiders hit .174 as a team and were led offensively by Aidan Apito (10 kills) and Aleks Kolodziej (10 kills). Martin Chromulak was solid at the net and tallied a team-high seven block assists. SVU (24-0, 7-0) was led by Christian Sheaffer's 19 kills and Tyler Sheaffer's 40 assists.

Sean Spring sprung the Scarlet Raiders into the lead in the opening set with a service ace, however, SVU responded with a 7-1 run to hop into the lead, a lead they would carry to the end of the set.

Rutgers-Newark flipped the script in the second set and evened the match at one after a pair of service aces by Kaden Komine pushed Rutgers-Newark into the lead, 20-15. The Knights got as close as four points before Spring tallied the final kill of the match.

The Scarlet Raiders put the Knights in a position they hadn't been in all season in the third set, winning 25-22 to take a 2-1 lead in the match. Rutgers-Newark used a 5-2 run at the halfway point to put themselves in the lead 16-14 thanks to an ace by Kolodziej. The Scarlet Raiders benefited from some errors down the stretch which allowed Apito to add to the tally and set SVU behind 2-1.

The Knights responded in the 4th set with a win to force a 5th set where they would ultimately edge out the Scarlet Raiders to remain undefeated on the season.
