Baseball Drops NJAC Opener to Stockton

NEWARK, NJ | The Rutgers-Newark baseball team opened New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) play this afternoon against Stockton University.

Game 1: Stockton 8, Rutgers-Newark 3

Rutgers-Newark (15-6, 0-1) tallied 10 hits and one error in game one led by two hits from Matthew Storch. Jon Rosado (2-for-3) and Daniel Fedorco (2-for-4) also joined Storch with two hits. Vince Taylor (1-4) tossed 6.1 innings with three strikeouts and three earned runs. Stockton (10-9, 1-0) used 9 hits to score eight runs and were led by Tony Gatti (2-for-5, 2 RBI) and Jordan Nitti (2-for-4, 2 RBI)

Stockton opened the scoring in the top of the 4th plating three runs on the back of a fielding error by the Scarlet Raiders. Rutgers-Newark opened its scoring ledger in the bottom half of the frame when Rob Gonzalez (1-for-4, 1 RBI) hit an RBI single to right field. The Scarlet Raiders doubled its tally in the next inning via a sacrifice fly by Joseph Bernardo (1-for-2, 1 RBI).

Stockton's bats came back alive in the top of the 6th where they tallied another three runs to extend its lead over the Scarlet Raiders. Storch would drive in Paul Recchia in the 8th, however, it wasn't enough to spark the offense for the Scarlet Raiders.

Game 2: Stockton 15, Rutgers-Newark 5

Rutgers-Newark (15-7, 0-2) scattered 12 hits and tallied five runs in the second game of the day but recorded six errors. Both Paul and Eric Recchia finished 3-for-5 in game two while Devin Rojas (0-1) suffered his first loss of the season from the bump. Stockton (11-9, 2-0) was led by Evan Brensen who went 3-for-5 with 3 RBIs.

The Scarlet Raiders jumped ahead quickly, tallying four runs in the 2nd inning when both Recchia's found space in left field to collect an RBI. Recchia would round out the inning when he scored on a throwing error.

Stockton got its offense going in the following innings, scoring four runs over the next three innings before capitalizing on errors to burst the game open with six runs in the 6th. Rutgers-Newark responded with a run of their own in the bottom half of the frame but were silenced for the remainder of the game.
