Rutgers-Newark Outlasted by Ramapo, 6-3

NEWARK, NJ | The Rutgers University-Newark baseball team dropped a New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) game to Ramapo College on Thursday afternoon, 6-3, at Weequahic Park. 

Rutgers-Newark (15-8, 0-3) used six hits to score three runs while also committing two errors in the field. Paul Recchia (2-for-4, 2 RBI) and Eric Recchia (2-for-5) paced the team at the plate while Vince Taylor (1-5) hurled six innings with five earned runs. Ramapo (12-8, 2-1) was led by John Higgins (3-for-5) and Jack Tallent (2-for-5, 2 RBIs). 

The Roadrunners took the lead early on, plating three runs in the top of the 1st via three consecutive singles. Rutgers-Newark took advantage of a throwing error by the shortstop to prolong the inning and add a tally to the board in their favor. Michael Weinbel walked to get on base in the bottom half of the 2nd before promptly moving to second via a passed ball. With Weinbel in scoring position, P. Recchia singled through the left side to bring Weinbel home and bring the Scarlet Raiders within one. 

Taylor settled into the game and blanked the Roadrunners for four innings after the first before the Roadrunners' bats came back alive in the top of the 6th where they added two more runs to their score, pushing their lead out to 5-2. The game would once again go dormant until the 9th where each team scored one run, however, for the Scarlet Raiders it wasn't enough as Ramapo held on to win the game.

The Scarlet Raiders return to action on Friday, March 5 when they host Ramapo College at 3:30 pm at Weequahic Park. This game has been moved from Ramapo due to the rain and Ramapo will serve as the home team.
