Baseball Falls to NJCU in the Rain, 8-3

NEWARK, NJ | The Rutgers-Newark baseball team dropped its 7th game in a row after falling to New Jersey City University, 8-3, in New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) action on a rainy Thursday afternoon.

Rutgers-Newark (15-12, 0-7) was held to five hits and committed three errors while scoring three runs in the conference loss. Gilroy Prial returned to the lineup and finished 1-for-2 with three walks and two stolen bases. Matthew Storch (1-for-3) and Michael Weinbel (1-for-3) tallied an RBI each for the Scarlet Raiders. NJCU (7-15, 2-5) scattered 11 hits and tallied eight runs in the win. Garret Allo paced the team, going 3-for-4 with an RBI while Ray Gelok finished 2-for-2 with two runs scored.

The Scarlet Raiders opened the scoring in the bottom half of the 1st inning when Eric Recchia scored on a passed ball. Both teams were held off of the scoreboard in the 2nd frame before NJCU plated four runs in the top of the 3rd behind an error by Rutgers-Newark. The Gothic Knights added to their tally in the 4th and 5th, scoring three runs over those two innings.

Rutgers-Newark's offense came alive in the 7th when Jon Rosado (1-for-4) hit a lead-off double to left center. Prial would walk before Paul Recchia would go on to load the bases after getting hit by a pitch. Storch picked up his RBI via a patient at bat which sent him to first via a base on balls. The stars were aligning for the Scarlet Raiders to make one of their patented comebacks much as they did earlier in the season but a pop up and a ground-out sandwiched a walk by Weinbel to end the inning.

The 7th inning would mark the end of the scoring for the Scarlet Raiders as they were held scoreless for the remaining two innings.

The Scarlet Raiders will get a second chance at the Gothic Knights tomorrow, Friday, April 12 as they will host NJCU at 4:00 pm.
