Rutgers-Newark Offense Stalls Against NJCU, 5-2

NEWARK, NJ | The Scarlet Raiders' baseball team's losing skid continued this afternoon at Weequahic Park as they fell in New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) action, 5-2, to New Jersey City University.

Rutgers-Newark (15-13, 0-8) scattered five hits and tallied two errors to go along with two runs. Connor Baksh (3-1) picked up his first loss of the season in five innings with three earned runs and one strikeout. At the dish, Paul Recchia (1-for-5) and Eric Recchia (1-for-4) brought in the two runs for Rutgers-Newark. NJCU (8-15, 3-5) completed the sweep of the Scarlet Raiders for the first time since the 2018 season led by Ricourt (2-for-4) and Garret Allo (2-for-4). Andre Dean (3-3) hurled 123 pitches with eight strikeouts and two earned runs before calling it a day.

The Scarlet Raiders took an early lead behind E. Recchia's RBI double to left field to score Gilroy Prial (1-for-2) who reached via a walk. After three scoreless innings to start the game, the Gothic Knights found their first runs of the game when they capitalized on a throwing error to start the inning. Two singles in the inning capped the two-run inning which put NJCU in the lead.

NJCU followed that up with three more runs in the bottom half of the 5th, using four hits and an error to do so. P. Recchia tried to spark the Scarlet Raiders' offense with an RBI but E. Recchia would go down swinging in the next at-bat to end the frame. The five-run two-inning outburst by the Gothic Knights would be all they needed as the Scarlet Raiders' bats would go dormant for the final three innings.

Rutgers-Newark returns to action on Saturday, April 13 when they head down to Camden, NJ to take on Rutgers-Camden in an NJAC doubleheader.
