Rutgers-Newark Baseball Drops NJAC Bout To Rutgers-Camden

CAMDEN, NJ | The Rutgers-Newark baseball team suffered a pair of New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) losses to Rutgers-Camden on Saturday afternoon.

Game 1: Rutgers-Camden 7, Rutgers-Newark 2

Rutgers-Newark (15-14, 0-9) tallied just four hits in the loss. Matthew Storch (1-for-4), Connor Baksh (1-for-3), Michael Weinbel (1-for-3), and Robert Gonzalez (1-for-3) created the offense for the Scarlet Raiders while Vince Taylor (1-6) hurled four innings with three strikeouts and four earned runs. Rutgers-Camden (19-9, 6-3) scattered 16 hits and scored seven runs led by Jose Carrea (4-for-5, 3 RBI).

Rutgers-Camden plated a run in the bottom half of the first inning via a sacrifice fly before adding another pair of runs in the bottom of the third to take a 3-0 lead. Rutgers-Newark found its first run of the game in the top of the fifth in the same fashion Rutgers-Camden did to open the game. Paul Recchia skied a ball to the outfield to score Ricky Gonzalez and cut the lead down to 5-1. Rutgers-Camden kept the pressure on and plated two more runs in the sixth and eighth innings.

The Scarlet Raiders found their second run of the game with another sacrifice fly to right field, this time by Weinbel to plate Storch. Rutgers-Newark was only able to muster up one run in the ninth as their rally was cut short with a strikeout.

Game 2: Rutgers-Camden 11, Rutgers-Newark 2

Rutgers-Newark (15-15, 0-10) increased their hit total from game one to 9 but that didn't result in more runs as they were held to two runs for the third straight game. Paul Recchia (2-for-3) and Michael Weinbel (3-for-3) did the damage for the Scarle Raiders tallying five of the team's 9 hits. On the mound, Matthew King (4-2) pitched 4.2 innings with two strikeouts and four earned runs. Rutgers-Camden (20-9, 7-3) used 12 hits and scored 11 runs in the win. Evan Carbone paced the Scarlet Raptors by going 3-for-5 with an RBI.

A pitching duel ensued between the schools as neither team could plate a run through four innings. The error bug then struck the Scarlet Raiders in the fifth as they committed two errors while the Scarlet Raptors tallied five hits to explode for seven runs. The Scarlet Raiders, behind a Gilroy Prial RBI triple, found their first run of the game. Rutgers-Newark added a late marker to their tally in the eighth while Rutgers-Camden found another three runs in the same frame to expand the gap between the squads and hold onto the win.

Rutgers-Newark returns to action on Thursday, April 18 when they travel to Wayne, NJ to take on William Paterson University at 3:30 pm.
