WAYNE, NJ | The Rutgers-Newark baseball team picked up its first New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) win of the season with a 10-4 win over William Paterson on the road on Thursday afternoon.
Rutgers-Newark (16-15, 1-10) scattered 12 hits to score 10 runs in the win over the Pioneers. Eric Recchia (3-for-5, 2 RBI) and Matthew Storch (2-for-5, 3 RBI) brought in half of the runs for the Scarlet Raiders. On the bump, Connor Baksh (4-1) pitched a seven-inning gem with three strikeouts and one earned run. William Paterson (7-23, 2-9) tallied 10 hits and committed one error in the field as they were held to four runs.
The Scarlet Raiders took a 1-0 lead to open the game behind Eric Recchia's eighth homer of the season. Rutgers-Newark then erupted for five runs in the second inning sparked by an RBI double by Michael Weinbel (2-for-3, 1 RBI). Jon Rosado, Gilroy Prial, Robert Gonzalez, and Eric Recchia all added to their tally with consecutive RBIs. After six runs in the first pair of innings, the game would go dormant until the seventh where both teams would go on to plate a run.
Rutgers-Newark wasn't done scoring just yet as they added three runs in the top of the eighth capped by a Storch 2 RBI single. In the final frame, the Pioneers added another run but their rally was cut short when Alex Couto forced a pop out to end the game.
The Scarlet Raiders return to action on Friday, April 19 when they host William Paterson at 3:30 pm.
