Game Recap: Men's Volleyball |

Raiders Split Battle 4 The Boardwalk Opening Night

ATLANTIC CITY, NJ – The Rutgers-Newark men's volleyball team split opening night at the Battle 4 The Boardwalk tournament in Atlantic City at the Waterfront Conference Center. The Raiders defeated Rivier University 3-1 in the season opener, and then fell to Lasell 3-0 in the second match.

Match 1: Rutgers-Newark 3, Rivier University 1 (19-25, 25-18, 25-22, 25-22)

The Scarlet Raiders took to the floor in their first match of 2025 and it was a victorious one. They dropped the first set, but after letting the nerves settle, they came back and won three straight sets to earn the season-opening win.

Aleks Kolodziej had a high of 16 kills after hitting a .231 clip. He added seven digs and four block assists. Benjamin Herrington added eight kills and six digs. Derek Au had 36 assists and four kills.

For Rivier, Racine Camara had a team-best 10 kills, plus four digs and three block assists. Matthew McCloskey collected eight kills for the Raiders.

Rutgers-Newark was able to record 10 or more kills in every set, including hitting .435 in the second set to keep Rivier at bay. Their foe struggled, as they only hit above .100 once and that was in the fourth and final set where they managed a .207 clip.

Match 2: Lasell University 3, Rutgers-Newark 0 (22-25, 21-25, 23-25)

The Raiders dropped their second match of the season to Lasell University in three sets. Aidan Apito led the way with 11 kills after hitting .333, in addition to collecting four digs.

Aleks Kolodziej added eight kills and three block assists. Derek Au had 32 assists and served up three aces.

Lasell started the match off hot hitting .609 with limited errors. Rutgers-Newark had 18 kills in the set, but fell just short on nipping the Boomers. Both teams hit in the .300's in the second set. The third set was bad for both team's percentage wise, with neither squad being able to hit over .050 due to too many costly errors.

Rutgers-Newark returns to the court on Sunday for a tri-match. The Raiders play Saint Elizabeth at 11 a.m., followed by Bard College at 3 p.m.
