Scarlet Raiders Complete Sweep in First Home Trimatch

NEWARK, NJ | After opening the season on Friday in Atlantic City, Rutgers-Newark (3-1) secured a pair of 3-0 victories at home against Saint Elizabeth (0-2) and Bard (1-3).

Match 1: Rutgers-Newark 3, Saint Elizabeth 0 (25-9, 25-15, 25-22)

The Scarlet Raiders looked comfortable from the very start. They jumped ahead 6-3 and then 10-5. From there, the home team kicked into second gear and finished out the set on a 15-4 run to complete the opening set with a score of 25-9.

In set number two, Kaden Komine got the ball rolling with four straight aces for Rutgers-Newark. That lead stayed pretty steady from start to finish. Juan Silva found the floor with a heads-up two-handed attack across the net into the empty space on the Eagles' side to make it 8-3. Saint Elizabeth were staying within striking distance, but the Scarlet Raiders once again had more in the tank. They continued to separate themselves from their opponents en route to a ten point set victory. 2-0 Rutgers-Newark.

The third set was the closest by far. Jonathan Mundaray and Kennedy Ibezim balled out for Saint Elizabeth, and the two teams were neck-and-neck until the very end. The Eagles started out in front 2-1, but they struggled to extend their lead to multiple points. The score was knotted at 8, and the visitors once again led 11-10. However, the Scarlet Raiders made sure to close it out. In the end, it was a clean and comfortable three set sweep for Rutgers-Newark.

Match 2: Rutgers-Newark 3, Bard 0 (25-19, 25-20, 25-19)

Rutgers-Newark initially seemed sharp, but Bard soon turned the tables. They forced errors from the Scarlet Raiders and forged an 8-3 edge. Eventually the hosts snapped out of it and put together a 12-5 stretch to go ahead 15-13, leading to a Bard timeout. Sean Spring and Aleks Kolodziej led the charge back, and that charge continued all the way to the end of the set. Bard showed some fight in the closing stages, but the Scarlet Raiders took the it 25-19.

Just like in the first, Rutgers-Newark had momentum early in set two but let it slip away. After going up 5-2, the Raptors tied it at six and later took an 11-9 lead. Thanks in part to solid play in the middle from Massimo Roco, the Scarlet Raiders got back on track and established a 17-13 edge. Once the score hit 20-15, a pair of outstanding serves from Sidney Stein helped to put Bard back within three, but once again Rutgers-Newark was able to put them away.

The third set got off to a shaky start - four of the first eight points scored were service errors. Nevertheless, the score was 4-4 and either team could take control. Rutgers-Newark grabbed the reins, and a pair of consecutive Sean Springs kills helped them along the way. They went ahead 13-9 but Bard stayed abreast and brought it back to a one point difference. However, Rutgers-Newark was not messing around this time and they rattled off four straight. In the end, it was a quiet conclusion to a hard fought game with a set three final score of 25-19.
