Rutgers-Newark Routs the Roadrunners

NEWARK, NJ | A much improved Ramapo (0-1) team gave the Scarlet Raiders (4-1) quite a scare, but they came out unscathed with a 3-0 victory (25-19, 29-27, 25-19).

Ramapo came out of the gate strong. They picked up a 4-3 edge, and the two teams were knotted at eight. Rutgers-Newark began to separate themselves in the middle of the set, pulling ahead 17-12. Ramapo put up a few points in the closing stages with strong attacks from Brady Cascone and Reece Kirchofer, but in the end the Scarlet Raiders put their opponents away by a score of 25-19.

Set number two was an absolute rollercoaster ride. Once again Ramapo were on top early, holding strong with a 10-7 advantage. The gap remained until the Scarlet Raiders pulled even at 15. From there, the score flip-flopped several times. The hosts fell behind 22-20 but turned it around to create a set point at 24-22. However, the Roadrunners were still kicking. They tied things up at 24 and had the Scarlet Raiders on the ropes several times in the ensuing extra points. However, thanks to great play from Derek Au and Aleks Kolodziej, Rutgers-Newark just barely snuck away with a set two victory at 29-27. What a thriller!

After such an exhilarating second set, there was far less drama in the third. After a back-and-forth start which saw honors even at seven, the Scarlet Raiders went ahead and never looked back. Ramapo got within one point at 14-13, but the hosts re-established their edge with a three point run. Rutgers-Newark saw off the rest of the competition, and grabbed themselves their third 3-0 win in a row.

Men's volleyball action continues this Friday, January 24th when the Scarlet Raiders head to Hoboken to take on highly rated Stevens Institute of Technology. That game will take place at 7 PM.
