Game Recap: Men's Volleyball |

Men’s Volleyball Gets Back On Track With Win Over Arcadia

NEWARK, NJ | Michael Suarez continued to make major contributions as the Scarlet Raiders (5-3) swept the Knights (4-6) with a final score of 3-0 (25-20, 25-23, 25-18).

Rutgers-Newark jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first set, but from there it was as tight as can be. There would be no lead of larger than three until Aidan Apito assisted Michael Suarez to set the score at 18-14. The Scarlet Raiders would not relinquish that advantage, and despite a short run by Arcadia at match point, it was a relatively straightforward set one victory.

The second set was similarly contentious, except that the home team had the edge. The score was briefly knotted at seven and then again at eight, but Arcadia soon got back on top. However, after an attacking error by Josh Clendening followed by a service ace from Derek Au, the Scarlet Raiders took over at 16-15.

But this set was far from over. The two teams would draw level at 17, 18, 19, and again at 22. Rutgers-Newark were able to put together two consecutive points in the crucial moment and squeak over the line with a 25-23 win to double their set lead.

In the third and final set, Arcadia struggled to get a foothold in the game. They remained close but could not grab a lead over the Scarlet Raiders, who went up 15-10 after a Juan Silva service ace. Rutgers-Newark would ride that lead all the way to the end of the set, and the end of the match.

Men's volleyball is right back in action this Saturday, February 8th. They will travel to Elizabethtown, PA to compete in a tri-match against Elizabethtown and Roanoke. Those games will take place at 1:00 PM and 3:00 PM, respectively.
