Game Recap: Men's Volleyball |

Scarlet Raiders Grab a Pair of Wins in Elizabethtown

ELIZABETHTOWN, PA | Men's volleyball improves to 7-3 and secures their first conference win after taking down Roanoke (8-5) and Elizabethtown (8-4) in a Saturday tri-match.

Match 1: Rutgers-Newark 3, Roanoke 1 (25-22, 25-19, 24-26, 25-16)

The first set was even to start. Thanks to attacking from Michael Suarez and service from Aidan Apito, the Scarlet Raiders established a modest 8-5 edge early on, but the Maroons stayed right on track. It wasn't until the end of the set at 22-19 that Rutgers-Newark found some breathing room again, and they were able to take that three point lead to the end of the set.

The Scarlet Raiders were more dominant in set two. They jumped ahead at 7-4 and then again at 13-7. Roanoke was able to pull close later on in the set, but they could only get within two points at 16-14. A few service errors at crucial moments slowed their momentum, and attack errors later on sealed a 2-0 set lead for Rutgers-Newark.

Roanoke were determined not to be swept. They cleaned up their play and took it to their opponents in the third set. The two teams were tied at 16 when the Maroons put up four consecutive points. Despite the Scarlet Raiders coming back from behind and tying things at 22, Roanoke just barely squeaked out a victory.

After dropping a set, Rutgers-Newark came out angry. An early run led by a pair of service aces from Yann Gomes gave them an 8-2 advantage. Roanoke fought to stay in it, but a five point run at the end of the set to make it 21-12 essentially put the game out of reach. Michael Suarez collected a kill from Derek Au to clinch the 3-1 match win.

Match 2: Rutgers-Newark 3, Elizabethtown 1 (25-17, 25-23, 21-25, 25-23)

This match was all about Michael Suarez, who ended the game with an insane 19 kills. He got started early, hitting home for the Scarlet Raiders' second point of set one from Derek Au. Then, with the score knotted at four, Rutgers-Newark won seven straight points to go up 11-4. The Blue Jays were never able to make up the difference, and Suarez found the floor to wrap up the set at 25-17.

Set number two was much more even. The Scarlet Raiders managed to remain slightly ahead until Elizabethtown tied things at 11. They pulled ahead momentarily, but a five point run fueled by Suarez and attacking errors from the Blue Jays made it 20-17 in favor of Rutgers-Newark. Massimo Roco and Aleks Kolodziej combined to close it out, doubling their team's set lead.

Just like Roanoke, the Blue Jays refused to go down without a fight. They came out in the third set and created a 5-1 gap. Rutgers-Newark failed to get within four points of their opponents until the very end, and they grabbed the third set by a score of 25-21.

The fourth and final set was back and forth to start. In fact, the two teams were tied at nearly every number. This trend continued until the end of the set, when none other than Michael Suarez snatched a pair of kills to secure the match in favor of the Scarlet Raiders.
