Men’s Volleyball Takes Out Wilkes in Three

NEWARK, NJ | In a quick Friday night faceoff, Rutgers-Newark (15-7) knocked off the Colonels (8-17) by a score of 3-0 (25-14, 25-16, 25-17).

After going back and forth to start, the two sides found themselves tied at six. This was when the Scarlet Raiders began to separate themselves. A pair of Derek Au aces put the home team up 13-9, and after one more point Wilkes took a timeout. Au welcomed them back onto the court with another ace, and Rutgers-Newark never looked back. They went on a 10-5 run led by the attacks of freshman trio Michael Suarez, Massimo Roco, and Alex Solodky to finish out the first set with a score of 25-14.

The Scarlet Raiders were a little quicker off the mark in set number two. They created a small lead thanks to a couple of kills from Roco but held onto it tightly at 6-4 and 7-5. Juan Silva gave them their first lead of greater than two points at 10-7. Then, on Silva's service, they rattled off three straight to really create some separation. From there, the home team cruised to a straightforward set two victory. Benjamin Herrington came into the game and secured a couple kills. A Jackson Shafer service error ended the set at 25-16 to put Rutgers-Newark in a truly formidable position.

In the third set, the ending felt mostly like a foregone conclusion. The hosts jumped out ahead 3-0, then eventually found themselves up 12-6. Justin Joyce subbed in and collected a pair of assists. A four point run under the service of Yann Gomes opened up a ten point lead that the Colonels could not overcome. They had a late surge right at the end but the sweep was never in doubt for the Scarlet Raiders.

Men's volleyball is right back in action tomorrow, March 15th. They will host a tri-match, playing against Drew and Elmira at 12:00 PM and 2:00 PM, respectively.
