SB Space Coast Games Day 1

Game Recap: Softball |

Softball Drops First Pair of Spring Games in Florida

COCOA BEACH, FL | On their first day of play in the Space Coast Spring Games, the Scarlet Raiders (0-2) fell to St. Norbert (1-3) in the morning and Hamilton (2-0) in the afternoon.

Game 1: St. Norbert 13, Rutgers-Newark 5

The game started positively for the Scarlet Raiders, as Kayla Cardozo and Keelin O'Brien drove in runs in the top of the first inning. However, the Green Knights quickly responded. They put together five hits, including two triples, and capitalized off of them to the tune of eight runs. Then, in the bottom of the third, St. Norbert plated three more to extend their lead to nine.

Rutgers-Newark did find some more offense later on courtesy of a double steal from O'Brien and Marissa Houseknecht followed by a sacrifice fly from Josephine Morales in the fifth. Isabella Middleton also knocked in a run in the top of the sixth.

But in the bottom of the sixth, the Green Knights brought home two more runners, and the game ended right at the end of that inning. A strong effort from the Scarlet Raiders, but the monster first inning put St. Norbert out of reach.

Game 2: Hamilton 4, Rutgers-Newark 0

The Scarlet Raiders had some offense going early again. Freshman Kristin Kloss led off the bottom of the first inning with a single, and got all the way to third base on a fielder's choice. However, they could not cash in on the opportunity.

Charly Peter, another new Scarlet Raider, was dealing on the mound, allowing only one hit through the first two frames. However, she ran into some trouble in the third. Hamilton clubbed three base hits, including an RBI triple from Alexis Mayer, and collected two runs from the rally.

Hamilton's bats were active again in the fifth. They strung together three singles and a double to grab another pair of runs. Up 4-0 with two innings to go, Hamilton had put themselves in a prime position to win the game.

And they weren't done there. Mayer racked up two more RBI in a five-run sixth inning to increase the lead to nine. An unfortunate series of events for the Rutgers-Newark on defense put them in a perilous position.

Meanwhile, the Scarlet Raiders offense was struggling. They had three hits in the game, two of which came from Kloss, and they couldn't produce anything in the bottom of the sixth. Thus, the game ended by run-ahead rule after six innings.
