Game Recap: Softball |

Softball Finishes Spring Games With Pair of Losses

MELBOURNE, FL | The Scarlet Raiders (2-8) concluded their business in Florida today. They lost to Western Connecticut State (5-7) by a score of 10-2 and to UW-Eau Claire (14-2) by a score of 11-0.

Game 1: Western Connecticut State 10, Rutgers-Newark 2

WestConn were on the Scarlet Raiders right from the very start. Brianna Malvino doubled in three runs in the bottom of the first inning, and the Wolves added one more to their tally in the second.

Rutgers-Newark was able to conjure a response in the third when Kalyna Figol scored on an error. However, WestConn scored another of their own in the bottom half of the frame.

Marissa Houseknecht offered some hope in the fifth when she reached home on a pass ball, but the Wolves quickly stifled it. They scored five more runs in the fifth and sixth, and the game ended after six innings.

Game 2: UWEC 11, Rutgers-Newark 0

Rutgers-Newark's offense could not produce in their final matchup of the Space Coast Spring Games. They only put up three hits while the Blugolds collected fourteen.

The game started slowly, as only one run was scored in the first two innings. In the third, UWEC began to turn it on. They scored four runs without clubbing a single extra base hit. Then, in the very next inning, they plated five more runs. This included an RBI triple from Brooklyn Swanepoel.

The Blugolds put the cherry on top with one more run in the fifth, and the game ended after five due to the run-ahead rule.
