SB vs Immaculata

Game Recap: Softball |

Softball Sweeps the Mighty Macs

NEWARK, NJ | With a comeback 10-6 victory in game one and an absolute rollercoaster 23-15 game two, the Scarlet Raiders (4-8) took a pair of wins against Immaculata (7-9) in their first home competition of the 2025 season.

Game 1: Rutgers-Newark 10, Immaculata 6

The Scarlet Raiders pounced on their opponents early. Maddy Haack doubled in a runner and Josephine Morales scored on a wild pitch to give the hosts a 2-0 lead in the first inning.

Charly Peter started the game pitching, and she was nails for the first three innings. She only allowed a single hit until the fourth, when the Mighty Macs seemingly figured her out. They flipped the game on its head, scoring five runs and taking the lead.

In the bottom of the fifth inning, now on their heels, Rutgers-Newark tied the game at five thanks again to Haack and Morales. However, in the top of the fifth the visitors edged ahead by a single run.

The bottom of the sixth is where the Scarlet Raiders made their statement. After tying the game via a wild pitch, Josephine Morales hit a grand slam to put her team up by four runs. She had an outstanding FIVE RBI!

Immaculata could not produce a response in the seventh with Madison Umlauf shutting them down, giving Rutgers-Newark the game one victory.

Game 2: Rutgers-Newark 23, Immaculata 15

With their adrenaline still pumping from game one, Rutgers-Newark entered the second matchup with a head of steam. They batted around and then some in the bottom of the first, putting up 11 runs in the process. EIGHT different players brought in a run in the inning, including Mariah Rimas-McManus who collected an RBI in each of her two at-bats.

After suffering such a big blow so early in the game, Immaculata did their best to chip away at the deficit. They scored a single run in both the second and third inning, and then they flipped a switch. The Mighty Macs scored four in the fourth, and the home team responded in kind with five.

However, Immaculata was not done. After another five runs in the fifth and four again in the sixth, they had managed to whittle the lead all the way down to a single run. A remarkable 11-run comeback was looking more and more likely.

But the Scarlet Raiders held it down. They exploded once more, plating seven in the bottom of the sixth thanks to a triple from Kalyna Figol and RBIs from Janiyah Smith and Kayla Cardozo. Rimas-McManus doubled to bring home two, extending the lead to eight and ending the game on the run-ahead rule.
