The Scarlet Raiders Secure Their Fourth Straight Win After Long Island Doubleheader

PATCHOGUE, NY | After taking two against Immaculata at home, Rutgers-Newark Softball (5-8) hit the road to complete another sweep, this time against St. Joseph's-Long Island (6-5).

Game 1: Rutgers-Newark 11, St. Joseph's-LI 4

The Golden Eagles got on the board in the first inning when Brooke Bove brought in a runner on a ground out. Rutgers-Newark responded in the top of the second thanks to a pass ball that allowed Alison Miller to cross home plate.

In the top of the third, Maddy Haack poked a double to left-center field to plate Keelin O'Brien, giving the Scarlet Raiders a one run lead. Then, in the fourth, they poured it on. Mariah Rimas-McManus and Keelin O'Brien both knocked RBI singles, and Haack was at it again to bring them both around.

After allowing five in the top half of the frame, St. Joseph's managed to score two to make the score 7-3. However, Rutgers-Newark was not done on offense. Three more runs in the fifth and one more in the sixth gave them a lead that they would not relinquish, and the Scarlet Raiders confidently marched towards a game one victory.

Game 2: Rutgers-Newark 13, St. Joseph's-LI 2

Mia Aquino took the ball for the Scarlet Raiders in game two, and she was absolutely wheeling and dealing. She pitched six innings, allowing only two runs on nine hits. While she was keeping the opposite side at bay, the bats got to work.

It was a slow start, but the offense eventually got going. Gabriela Forese got things started in the third when she singled to bring in Keelin O'Brien. Then, in the following frame, the floodgates opened. Kayla Cardozo tripled with the bases loaded to bring everybody home, and Maddy Haack clubbed an RBI double as well. After four, the Scarlet Raiders led 6-0.

The Golden Eagles did finally get on the board in the fifth with a pair of runs from an Antonia Busa RBI single. However, Rutgers-Newark was rolling. They plated seven in the top of the sixth, including a two-run home run hit by Destiny Maury. With their lead now up to 11 runs, the game ended after the bottom of the sixth.
