Game Recap: Softball |

The Win Streak Ends as the Pioneers Take Two From the Scarlet Raiders

WAYNE, PA | Coming off of four straight wins against Immaculata and St. Joseph's-Long Island, Rutgers-Newark Softball (6-10) ran into a brick wall in William Paterson (9-7), who took both matchups in a Saturday doubleheader.

Game 1: William Paterson 7, Rutgers-Newark 5

It was an anomalous game for the Pioneers, as all of their runs came in a single inning. With no score in the bottom of the second inning, the hosts strung together a five hit rally that netted them seven runs. The burst of offense included RBI from Taylor Palmieri, Samantha Campos, and Brandi Shortway.

Now suddenly down by a considerable margin, it took the Scarlet Raiders a moment to settle down and respond. Keelin O'Brien jump-started the offense with a solo homerun to lead off the fourth, and Gabriela Forese added an RBI single to double the tally for the frame. Marissa Houseknecht also brought in a run with a bases loaded HBP to bring the score to 7-3 after four innings.

After making it through the second inning, Madison Umlauf was untouchable in the pitcher's circle. She powered through four scoreless innings, allowing only four hits. However, the damage had already been done. Destiny Maury brought Rutgers-Newark slightly closer with a two-run homer in the seventh, but it just wasn't enough. The Scarlet Raiders fell two runs short, and William Paterson took the game one win.

Game 2: William Paterson 11, Rutgers-Newark 1

The Scarlet Raiders clubbed the same number of hits in the second game as they did in the first: seven. But in game two, the hits were not translating to runs. A sacrifice fly hit by Destiny Maury scored Marissa Houseknecht in the third, and that was all the offense that Rutgers-Newark produced.

Meanwhile, the William Paterson bats got to work right from the start. They plated four in the first and added another in the third.

Then, in the bottom of the fourth inning, the Pioneers broke the game wide open. They put up a six spot thanks to an RBI triple by Brandi Shortway and doubles from Gabriella Vazquez and Lauren Hutchison.

After the gap expanded to ten runs, the Scarlet Raiders came up empty in the fifth, ending the game due to the run-ahead rule.
