Game Recap: Men's Volleyball |

Scarlet Raiders Take Down the Pride in Three

NEWARK, NJ | Rutgers-Newark men's volleyball (14-7) put on a Friday night show, taking a 3-0 victory over Widener (12-7) at home (25-13, 25-18, 25-18).

Rutgers-Newark started strong, with a pair of Massimo Roco aces setting the store at 6-2. They maintained that lead as the first set progressed, and extended it to eight at 16-8. Widener took a timeout but they were unable to make the correct adjustments. The Scarlet Raiders kept their foot on the gas and took the first set with a commanding 25-13 scoreline.

The Pride came out the gate sharper in set number two. The two sides split the first ten points, then a few Widener attacking errors gave the home team an 8-5 advantage. Rutgers-Newark capitalized on this opportunity, with Michael Suarez and Vincent Lopez contributing to the cause. Once again the visitors took a timeout mid set, but they just could not chase down the Scarlet Raiders. Michael Martinez finished with a strong attack to make it 21-14, but Suarez provided the finishing touch to double his team's set lead.

Sean Spring was in action early in the third set, collecting two kills as Rutgers-Newark established a 5-3 edge. Widener found a burst of energy and tied the set at nine as well as ten. However, Alex Kolodziej took action. He put up two kills on consecutive points to make it 13-10, causing Widener to take a timeout. After play resumed, Derek Au smacked two straight aces, and that killed off the Pride's momentum. Juan Silva picked up a few points, and provided the match-sealing kill to give the Scarlet Raiders a 3-0 victory.

Men's volleyball will hit the court again on Friday, March 14th. They will play Wilkes in their first home conference game of the season at 7:00 PM right here in the Golden Dome.
