Softball’s Conference Woes Continue with Kean DH Sweep

NEWARK, NJ | The Scarlet Raiders (10-16) continued their streak of not splitting a single doubleheader, but found themselves on the wrong side of the scoreboard as Kean (15-15) took two at Frederick Douglass field.

Game 1: Kean 12, Rutgers-Newark 2

Kean got off the mark early. Gina Mahlik singled up the middle to score Brianna Sciulli, giving the visitors a 1-0 lead.

Then, in the third, the Cougars were at it again. An RBI triple hit by Maya Thompson scored Mahlik, and Kylie Petak singled her home. Samantha Raymond added one more with an RBI single of her own, making it 4-0 in favor of the visitors.

Now 4-0 down, the Rutgers-Newark offense responded. Josephine Morales slugged a long double over the left fielder's head, scoring Keelin O'Brien and Mariah Rimas-McManus and cutting the deficit in half.

However, Kean continued to rack up the score. They managed to scrape together three runs without registering a single hit in the fourth, replenishing their advantage and widening the gap to five.

In the very next frame, the Cougars broke the game wide open. Seven hits netted them nine runs, and they found themselves ahead by a scoreline of 16-2.

The Scarlet Raiders did fashion a decent reply, scoring six with only two hits, but it wasn't enough to prevent the game from ending after five innings due to the run-ahead rule.

Game 2: Kean 6, Rutgers-Newark 0

Kean was the first to strike in game two as well. Kiley Allen tripled to score Kylie Petak to give the Cougars a 1-0 lead in the top of the second.

After that, it was a complete pitcher's duel. Charly Peter held down the fort for Rutgers-Newark, and Olivia Quercia kept the box score clean for the Cougars.

In the sixth inning, Kean gave themselves some breathing room. They added three runs to their tally, including an inside-the-park homerun by Gina Mahlik, making it a 4-0 game.

The visitors tacked on two more in the seventh, and with the Scarlet Raiders unable to produce a sufficient response, the Cougars grabbed the win.
