Baseball Comes From Behind to Snatch Victory from NJCU

NEWARK, NJ | After taking a tough loss yesterday in the away game, the Scarlet Raiders (12-16) stormed back and secured a walk-off win over the Gothic Knights (10-15-1), bringing their conference record to 4-4 on the season.

NJCU was off the mark quickly. John Abrahamsen hit a sacrifice fly to score Enrique Beltra in the first. Then, in the very next inning, an RBI double from Jeremy Ricourt and a two-run triple hit by Garrett Allo increased their lead to four.

After a scoreless third, the visiting bats produced one more run in the fourth. That is when the Rutgers-Newark offense came to life. Devin Rojas and Matthew Torreto each poked RBI singles, and Michael Weinbel notched a sacrifice fly for a total of three runs to make it a 5-3 game.

There was more action to come in the fifth. NJCU added to their lead once again, as Collin Elam and Jeremy Ricourt each brought a runner home to widen the gap back out to four. Rojas pulled one back in the bottom half, but the Scarlet Raiders still trailed by three going into the final innings.

After the fifth, the arms for the home team were unstoppable. Joey Santi, Michael Romano, and Vince Taylor all put up zeroes. Meanwhile, the offense was making up ground. Ulisses Ferraz doubled to plate a pair in the seventh, and Matthew Storch brought home the tying run in the eighth with another sacrifice fly.

Neither team could make the difference in the ninth, so into extra innings they went. Taylor put up a one-two-three inning, and the Gothic Knights' pitching was in trouble. Gil Prial came up with the bases loaded and two outs, and he was able to work a walk to bring in the game-winning run! The Scarlet Raiders split the home and away with a walk-off walk!

Baseball will be back in action this Sunday, April 13th. They will play a doubleheader against Rutgers-Camden in Weequahic Park with a scheduled start time of 11:30 AM.
