Drew Takes Two From the Scarlet Raiders

NEWARK, NJ | Softball (11-21) narrowly avoided being held scoreless in another afternoon doubleheader, as Drew (16-16) departed the city of Newark with two dominant wins.

Game 1: Drew 5, Rutgers-Newark 0

It didn't take long for Drew to get going. Three runs in the first set the tone, and the Scarlet Raiders could not match. They only poked four hits in the game, and just one went for extra bases: a double hit by Maddy Haack in the second.

After two scoreless frames, the Rangers worked on extending their advantage. Destiny Medina slapped an RBI single, and Olivia Magliacano doubled to bring her home.

Drew pitching was serving up zeroes all day long. Rutgers-Newark could not plate a single runner, and the game ended with a final score of 5-0.

Game 2: Drew 9, Rutgers-Newark 1

The visitors once again got on the board in the first when Zoey Shimp, who singled to lead off the game, came in to score on a wild pitch. Natalie Mignone singled in another to give the Rangers a two run cushion before the Scarlet Raiders got their first chance at the plate.

In the second, the Rangers widened the gap. A pair of RBI doubles each plated two runs, setting the score at 6-0 after the top of the second. In the bottom of that frame, the Scarlet Raiders had a golden opportunity with the bases loaded and nobody out. However, Drew pitcher Amanda Novak escaped the jam by inducing a popup and a double play.

Drew scored one more in the third, and once again the Scarlet Raider bats were stagnant. Mariah Rimas-McManus slashed a two out single into left-center in the third, and Keelin O'Brien followed it by outrunning a chopper hit to the shortstop. A wild pitch allowed both runners to advance into scoring position, but a flyout ended the rally before any runners came home.

In the fifth inning, Haley Meiehofer clubbed a triple with two runners on, bringing the difference to nine. Rutgers-Newark, still yet to score, could only produce a single run in the bottom half, ending the game after five due to the run-ahead rule.
