Scarlet Raiders Unable to Topple TCNJ

NEWARK, NJ | After coming up against another formidable conference opponent, Rutgers-Newark were once again unable to find a win in either game of a doubleheader. The Lions (21-13) came away with two strong victories, making quick work of the Scarlet Raiders (11-25).

Game 1: TCNJ 10, Rutgers-Newark 1

After a scoreless first, the Lions got the ball rolling in the second. With two runners on, Camryn Kitchin executed a squeeze bunt to score Mckayla Yard. They followed that up with seven more runs on seven hits. The Scarlet Raiders were unable to respond in the bottom half, so the score stood at 8-0 after two.

Rutgers-Newark struggled to string hits together. Kristin Kloss led off the first with a single down the left field line and slashed another into left-center in the third, but was not driven home on either occasion.

In the fourth, the visitors got back to work. Camryn Kitchin and Gianna Vazquez both slapped RBI doubles, widening the gap to ten.

This time the Scarlet Raiders did respond. Gabriela Forese doubled to score Jessica Boyce, who was pinch-running for Josephine Morales. Unfortunately for the hosts, that was the only run they could muster.

Madison Umlauf did admirable work as a relief pitcher. She came in and provided 3.2 solid innings, allowing only three earned runs. However, the damage had already been done, and the Rutgers-Newark offense could not break down Lions pitcher Maya Knasiak.

The scoreboard read 10-1 to TCNJ after the end of the fifth inning, and thus the game ended due to the run-ahead rule.

Game 2: TCNJ 7, Rutgers-Newark 0

It was the visitors who got the scoring started again. In the top of the second inning, Camryn Kitchin grounded out to second base, allowing Mckayla Yard to score from third on the play.

The third inning was silent, but the Lions added to their tally in the fourth. Sara Vincent and Gianna Vazquez each drove home a run with a single, and pinch-runner Jessica Sclafani scored on a passed ball to make it a 4-0 game.

TCNJ pitcher Elizabeth Gosse was absolutely tearing through the Rutgers-Newark lineup. She gave up only four hits in a complete game shutout, putting her team in a prime position to win.

The Lions picked up three more runs in the fifth courtesy of a fielder's choice, a wild pitch, and a sacrifice fly. This burst of offense expanded the gap to seven.

Gosse powered the visitors through the final innings with ease, and TCNJ took home a spotless game two victory.
