Game Recap: Men's Volleyball |

Men’s Volleyball Finishes the Regular Season With Saturday Tri-Match

CAMBRIDGE, MA | In their final two games before the playoffs, the Scarlet Raiders (21-9) dropped a match to MIT (16-14) before sweeping Curry College (5-18) in dominant fashion.

Match 1: MIT 3, Rutgers-Newark 1 (22-25, 25-21, 28-26, 25-22)

The Scarlet Raiders started well to begin the match. They grabbed an 8-5 lead, and they rode that small advantage throughout the first set. The largest lead they had was at 14-10, and the Engineers were never out of contention. They came back and tied the score at 18, but Rutgers-Newark won four of the next five points. That lead was enough to push them over the finish line.

Set two started out with an even split of the first ten points. Then, MIT went on a 6-1 run to take an 11-6 lead. That gap was enough to propel them comfortably towards a set victory until 22-16 when the Scarlet Raiders won four straight points to get within two. However, the hosts held strong and took three of the last four to even the set score at one.

The Engineers rode their momentum into the next set, jumping out to a 5-1 lead. From there, the two teams went back and forth until another three point run extended MIT's lead to seven. The set seemed nearly done and dusted at 23-17, but Rutgers-Newark fought back. They won eight of nine points, suddenly putting them ahead at 25-24. Unfortunately, the run came to a hard stop right there, and the Engineers once again finished strong to take their first set lead of the day.

MIT again took command early in set number four. After going ahead 5-2, their three point lead remained intact virtually the entire set. The Scarlet Raiders were within striking distance the whole time, but they simply could not overcome the early deficit. In the end, MIT stayed steady and took the fourth set as well as the match.

Match 2: Rutgers-Newark 3, Curry 0, (25-18, 25-20, 25-12)

The Scarlet Raiders were determined to make up for their previous loss. They started the first set with a 6-2 stretch, but the Colonels had a response. They rattled off five in a row to take a 7-6 lead. That spurred Rutgers-Newark into action, as they took six of the next seven points. Then, another four point run put them up by eight. Curry continued to fight, but the Scarlet Raiders had an advantage large enough to secure them a set one victory.

The Scarlet Raiders once again exploded out of the gates in the second set. But again, just like the first set, after going down 11-3 the Colonels woke up and made it 12-10. Once more, it seemed like fans were watching a replay because Rutgers-Newark won eight of nine points after that to make it a 20-11 game. Curry was able to make up some ground, getting within four points, but it wasn't enough as the Scarlet Raiders took set two.

The opening stages of set number three were somewhat more contentious, creating a 10-7 scoreline in favor of Rutgers-Newark. Then, like they had in each of the two previous sets, they found a second wind. However, this time they did not let up one bit. They went on a blazing 14-3 run, completely shutting down their opponents and grabbing a commanding match win with a 3-0 set score.
