Game Recap: Softball |

Senior Day Brings Two Wins for Softball

NEWARK, NJ | The Scarlet Raiders (10-14) bounced back after a difficult conference matchup to take a pair of commanding victories over Brooklyn College (8-13).

Game 1: Rutgers-Newark 4, Brooklyn College 0

Madison Umlauf was throwing flames in the pitcher's circle for the Scarlet Raiders. She was putting up zeroes in the box score, but the Rutgers-Newark offense was quiet as well. The game remained scoreless after four innings.

Then, in the bottom of the fifth, Kristin Kloss came up clutch. She slashed a single up the middle to bring home Marissa Houseknecht and Jessica Boyce to give the hosts a 2-0 edge.

In the sixth, the Scarlet Raiders doubled their lead. Josephine Morales doubled in Keelin O'Brien, and later scored on an error following a single by Gabriela Forese.

Umlauf continued to deal. She delivered a complete game shutout, allowing only five hits in the process, securing a 4-0 game one victory.

Game 2: Rutgers-Newark 8, Brooklyn College 0

The Scarlet Raider bats were lively from the jump in game two. Isabella Middleton crossed home plate in the bottom of the first courtesy of a Kalyna Figol single. Later that same inning, Kristin Kloss scored on a sacrifice fly hit by Keelin O'Brien.

In the very next inning, Kristin Kloss scored Madison Umlauf on another sacrifice fly to bring the lead to three. And the scoring continued for the home team. Janiyah Smith singled, plating Kalyna Figol and Maddy Haack. Then, Alison Miller scored on a double steal to make it 6-0.

Not only was the offense clicking, but Charly Peter kept the Bulldog bats quiet. She gave her team five scoreless innings, paving the way for another tally in the win column for Rutgers-Newark.

Janiyah Smith and Kristin Kloss both hit RBI singles in the bottom of the fifth, expanding the lead to eight and ending the game due to the run-ahead rule.
