NEWARK, NJ – The Rutgers-Newark baseball team earned a 7–1 victory over Saint Elizabeth University on Tuesday, using a fast offensive start and strong pitching to secure the win.
The Scarlet Raiders wasted little time jumping ahead in the bottom of the first inning. Michael Weinbel delivered a two-run double that brought home Matthew Toretto and Gilroy Prial to open the scoring. Weinbel later crossed the plate himself after a single from Malik Little, giving Rutgers-Newark a 3–0 lead after the first.
Rutgers-Newark added to its advantage in the second inning when Prial singled to score Jonathan Jerez, extending the lead to 4–0.
The Scarlet Raiders continued their offensive surge in the third inning. Little doubled to left field to drive in Weinbel before coming around to score on a triple from Joseph Bernardo. Bernardo later capped off the scoring in the inning, crossing the plate on a single from Trevor Wallace to give Rutgers-Newark a commanding 7–0 lead.
Saint Elizabeth managed to push across a run in the eighth inning, but Rutgers-Newark kept the Eagles quiet for the remainder of the contest to secure the 7–1 victory.
On the mound, Joey Santi (2-0) picked up the win for the Scarlet Raiders. The right-hander tossed five scoreless innings, allowing just two hits while facing 20 batters and striking out two.
Weinbel led the Rutgers-Newark offense with two hits, two runs scored, and two RBIs, while Little added two hits, two RBIs, and a run scored. Bernardo also had a strong defensive performance, recording 13 putouts in the field.
The Scarlet Raiders will now head to Florida for a slate of non-conference contests during their spring break trip.
