DAVENPORT, Fla. – The Scarlet Raiders opened play at the RussMatt Central Florida Invitational with a 4-3 victory over the University of Wisconsin–Stout on Saturday afternoon.
Rutgers University–Newark used a four-run second inning and strong pitching to hold off a late rally from the Blue Devils.
Rutgers-Newark broke through in the bottom of the second inning, beginning with an RBI double from Damon Rivera that plated Joseph Bernardo to open the scoring. Later in the frame, Gilroy Prial delivered a two-RBI single to left field to score RJ Kernan and Rivera, pushing the lead to 3-0. Michael Weinbel capped the rally with an RBI single that brought home Reid Duffus and gave the Scarlet Raiders a 4-0 advantage.
Wis.-Stout chipped away late, scoring twice in the seventh inning on a two-RBI single by Nick Webster before Austin Miller launched a solo home run in the ninth to make it a one-run game. Ostrowski responded by striking out the final batter to secure the victory.
The early support proved enough for Joshua Warming, who earned the win after throwing seven strong innings. The right-hander allowed just five hits and two runs while striking out five. Chase Ostrowski closed the door over the final two innings, striking out four while allowing one run.
Rivera led Rutgers-Newark at the plate with two hits and an RBI, while Prial drove in two runs and Weinbel added an RBI as the Scarlet Raiders collected seven hits in the contest.
