Scarlet Raiders Drop Pair to Franklin & Marshall in Lancaster

LANCASTER, Pa. – The Rutgers-Newark baseball team dropped both games of a doubleheader against Franklin & Marshall on Saturday afternoon, falling 17-2 in the opener before dropping game two, 14-4.

In game one, Franklin & Marshall struck first with a run in the second inning before the Scarlet Raiders answered in the third. Michael Weinbel provided the highlight for Rutgers-Newark, launching a two-run home run to left field that plated Matthew Torreto to give the Scarlet Raiders a brief 2-1 lead.

The Diplomats responded quickly in the bottom half of the inning with five runs to regain the advantage. Franklin & Marshall then broke the game open in the fourth inning, scoring nine runs to extend the lead before adding two more runs in the sixth inning to secure the 17-2 victory.

Rutgers-Newark jumped out to an early lead in game two, scoring twice in the first inning. RJ Kernan opened the scoring with a solo home run before Calvin Claiborne doubled to center field to bring home Jonathan Jerez, giving the Scarlet Raiders a 2-0 advantage.

Franklin & Marshall answered with a pair of runs in the second inning to tie the game before taking control. The Diplomats added three runs in the third inning and three more in the fourth on a home run to take control of the contest.

Rutgers-Newark was able to push across two runs between the fifth and sixth innings, but the Scarlet Raiders were unable to string together enough offense as the Diplomats added six more runs late to cap off the 14-4 victory.
