Scarlet Raiders Wrap up Day 1 of NJAC Championship

Mahwah, N.J. — The New Jersey Athletic Conference Championships got underway on day one, with both the Rutgers-Newark men's and women's track & field teams opening competition against a strong conference field.

On the women's side, Fejiro Akiri led the way in the hammer throw, earning a fourth-place finish with a mark of 43.12 meters. Teammate Shakil Auguste followed with a sixth-place finish, posting a throw of 40.53 meters to give the Scarlet Raiders valuable early points in the field events.

On the track, Chidimma Igwe competed in both sprint events, placing ninth in the 100-meter dash with a time of 12.53 seconds before finishing 11th in the 200-meter dash in 25.62 seconds.

For the men, Ralph Atorkui competed in the 400-meter dash, finishing 17th overall with a time of 51.50 seconds.

The Scarlet Raiders will look to build on their performances as competition continues with additional events set to unfold on day two of the NJAC Championships.
