NEWARK, NJ – Senior forward David Cherry (Linden, NJ/Roselle Catholic HS) and junior forward Deshawn Singleton (Passaic, NJ/Passaic) netted 11 points apiece to lead a balanced Rutgers-Newark attack as the Scarlet Raiders down CCNY, 69-41, in The Golden Dome.

Rutgers-Newark (4-1) got 10 points apiece from junior forward Ryan Gillens (Newark, NJ/Eastside) and junior guard De'Vion Manning (Maplewood, NJ/St. Benedict's Prep) as well as nine from sophomore forward Kenny Widgeon (Plainfield, NJ/The Hotchkiss School). CCNY fell to 0-3 on the season.
Junior point guard Tim Smith (Mullica Hill, NJ/Camden Catholic) contributed a game-high five steals to go along with six rebounds, five points and a steal as the Raider bounced back from their first loss of the year to give head coach Joe Loughran his 99th career victory.
Gillens hauled down a team-high eight rebounds while Cherry added four rebounds, two assists, two steals and a two blocked shot.
Junior guard Franklyn Dunn paced the Beavers with a game-high 17 points to go along with eight rebounds to tie Gillens for the game-high. No other CCNY player reached double figures as Rutgers-Newark limited the visitors to a 33.3% field goal performance.
Widgeon had all nine of his points and Cherry, eight of his 11, as Rutgers-Newark recovered from a sluggish opening half to post 41 points in the second period. After leading just 28-18 at intermission, the Raiders muscled their way to a 49-23 lead with 12:32 left. A 3-point jumper by Smith and a dunk by Gillens were followed by back-to-back inside baskets by Singleton in the 9-0 spurt which capped the decisive run. R-N led by as many as 30 points late in the contest.
Rutgers-Newark takes a Thanksgiving Holiday break before hosting Ramapo in the New Jersey Athletic Conference opener for each team on Wednesday, December 3. The women's game tips off at 5:30 p.m. with the men's to follow at 7:30 in The Golden Dome.
